Is your heart coming out of your mouth?

Some people don't seem to be able to control what comes out of their mouth. The Bible tells us why. It is because the origin of the words is in the heart. Righteous people just naturally seem to be able to speak good and others - well, they just do not seem to be able to stop the evil that flows from theirs. Why is this?

When someone speaks negative, or contentious or other sinful words, there are further increases in frequency. The Bible says that these words come from the heart of the person - as in Matthew 15:18-20.

"But those things which proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and they defile a man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man....... "

So it is as though the words spoken out of the mouth go back into the heart to defile it further. It becomes a circular process.

Furthermore, the Bible says that whatever is abundant in the heart - what there is most of - then it is out of that abundance that the words will come. If there is lots of good in the heart, good will come out of the mouth. If the heart is defiled rather than righteous, much evil will come from the mouth. This is told in Matthew 12:34-35.

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil manout of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things."

Furthermore the Bible tells of one of the end results of our words in Matthew 12:37.

"For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned."

So we are condemned for evil words and justified by righteous ones.

Further light is shed upon the issue by Proverbs 18:20.

" A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled."

The implication here is that with whatever a person speaks - either good or evil - he will be filled.

What is the effect of contentious words on relationships?

The Bible says that when contentious words are spoken, they build bars around a person, separating them from others. Proverbs 18:19 says that:

"A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city: and their contentions are like the bars of a castle".

Negative defiling words are barriers around a person, making it more difficult for them to reach others and others to reach them.

Finally, an effect of continually speaking out words that defile the heart, is in Prov 14:14.

"The backslider in heart shall be filled with his own ways: and a good man shall be satisfied from himself."

This is saying that people caught up in their ways - with a heart filled by their own negative words - may well be going backwards. And become selfish! Check yourself out. Do you speak more kind or evil words - tone of voice included?

True believers should not be selfish - or speak unkindly.

Remedies? Cleansing?

1. Immediate confession.

2. Ask the Lord to circumcise your heart of that sin.
