Coping with Fear and torment

Causes of Fear

Disobedience. "So he said, "I heard Your voice in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself."" -- Gen 3:10 (NKJV)

Impending Judgement "By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith." -- Heb 11:7 (NKJV)

Persecution "Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in the midst, and said to them, "Peace be with you."" -- John 20:19 (NKJV)

Events of nature "When they had taken it on board, they used cables to undergird the ship; and fearing lest they should run aground on the Syrtis Sands, they struck sail and so were driven.......Then, fearing lest we should run aground on the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern, and prayed for day to come." -- Acts 27:17 & 29 (NKJV)

Suspicion "And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple." -- Acts 9:26 (NKJV)

Uncertainty "But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ." -- 2 Cor 11:3 (NKJV)

Final events "men's hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth, for the powers of heaven will be shaken." -- Luke 21:26 (NKJV)

Death "and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage." -- Heb 2:15 (NKJV)

Effects of fear

Demoralisation "Then the Philistines gathered together to fight with Israel, thirty thousand chariots and six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand which is on the seashore in multitude. And they came up and encamped in Michmash, to the east of Beth Aven. When the men of Israel saw that they were in danger (for the people were distressed), then the people hid in caves, in thickets, in rocks, in holes, and in pits. And some of the Hebrews crossed over the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. As for Saul, he was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed him trembling. Then he waited seven days, according to the time set by Samuel. But Samuel did not come to Gilgal; and the people were scattered from him." -- 1 Sam 13:5-8 (NKJV)

Paralysis "And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men." -- Mat 28:4 (NKJV)

Silent testimony "His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue." -- John 9:22 (NKJV)

Means of suffering unbearable pain.

Through unforgiveness ""And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him." -- Mat 18:34 (NKJV)

Through persecutors "And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return." -- Heb 11:15 (NKJV)

Through Fear "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love." -- 1 John 4:18 (NKJV)

Through flame ""And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.'But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented." -- Luke 16:23-25 (NKJV)

Through God "Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand,he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."" -- Rev 14:9-11 (NKJV)

Through the human soul ""How long will you torment my soul, And break me in pieces with words?" -- Job 19:2 (NKJV)
